Why Does my iPhone Battery Keep Dying?

I was talking to my sister the other day, and she said, “I’m red-lining. I’ll call you back.”

"He's dead, Jim!"

"He's dead, Jim!"

After we hung up, I realized that I was red-lining, too.  That wicked red line on your battery life indicator, the one that should come with a loud voice to proclaim, “Hang up! Hang up, now!” Because, here’s the thing; bringing your battery back from the dead is hard on it.  Similarly, charging it all the way to 100% is also hard on the battery. So, try to keep the charge somewhere in between. And speaking of battery usage, try to talk on the phone a little less.

No lower! Please!

No lower! Please!

What else kills your battery? Well, open apps, for one. There is a certain member of our family who regularly has ten apps running at once. If you get into the habit of giving the home button a double press and then sliding all those apps up and out, your battery will thank you.

Here are some apps with the mercy of a succubus:

Games. We love the games. But they don’t love our battery, and their flash and spin will drain our battery even faster if they’re connected to the internet. Pokémon Go, you are my darling and my battery’s nemesis.

Facebook. “But I NEED to know if Uncle Earl’s gall bladder surgery was a success!” you say. Wait until you get home, I say. Or else peek real fast and don’t take the time to post personal thanks to every member of his surgical team. If the FB app is killing your battery too badly, you might just want to use your browser. Here’s how: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/facebook-iphone-battery-life_us_56b8b6c5e4b08069c7a7fc54

Another reason FB is so draining is our next item, which is…

Location services. Oh, Maps and Directions, you’ve saved me so much wandering and confusion! But you’re like an overfull boat during high tide and you're running my phone battery aground. Frequent users of location services are Yelp, Find a Friend, and shopping apps. Review to decide which are important to keep in the loop, and then let them access your location ‘while using’ in settings/Privacy/Location Services.

FB also uses location services, which brings us to another reason FB is such a battery bleeder…

FB Messenger. Good morning, Vietnam! With the FB Messenger, you’re instantly connected to friends all over the planet--It’s such a pleasure to speak with you--Now, shut them up by looking on the app for their conversation, clicking on their name and then turning the notification to ‘off’ for (it lets you choose a time length of 15 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours, or until I turn it back on). This is especially useful if you’re in a group chat, because you can shut them off until you’re back where you can charge your phone and read the 47 messages you missed. If you want to shut everyone up, click on ‘me’ in the lower right-hand corner, and under notifications there is a ‘do not disturb’ option. While you’re there, you have the option of turning off the vibration when there is a message. That’s another little battery drain.

Snapchat. Another app which is a sucking chest wound in the life of your battery. Everything with moving pictures, including Wimp, Netflix and You Tube, too.

Snapchat kills your battery. Even when it looks like a baby deer...

Display and Brightness. You know it’s too high if you turn on your phone, and it’s bright enough to make a baby gremlin squeal and shriek, “Bright light! Bright light!”

Sigh. For those of you who were born in the last thirty years, waste some battery life so you can get in on the joke here >> https://youtu.be/grrADdmfrSI

Luckily, you can turn brightness down in Settings/Display and Brightness.

Is your phone screen too bright?

Is your phone screen too bright?

If you can’t see it well when you’re outside, you can use auto-brightness or you can turn your off. You’re outside. It’s a beautiful. Quit looking at your phone and enjoy the day!

Actually, that might not be entirely accurate. Turning your phone off and on is another huge battery drain. So, the best time to actually shut your phone off is when you’re going to bed or some other activity which will require several hours. You know that notice in your doctor’s office that says, ‘Please turn your cellphone off’.  You don’t need to heed that advice unless you’re having a major medical procedure right then or your doctor is just really busy and very slow. Very, very slow. Turn the phone to ‘mute’, instead.

The second place you’ll want to shut your phone off is if you’re in areas with low or poor reception because it automatically starts seeking better reception.  While you’re in ceiling-dense buildings (I’m looking at you, Kohl’s!), the underground or the middle of the desert, your phone is grasping over and over for better reception, which drains the battery. Turn on airplane mode until you’re in a better place. If you can’t go without (like if your home is in one of those areas), consider buying a cell phone repeater Incidentally, that power save? Only works when you’re halfway across the prairie.

And finally, if you’re not honestly sure which of your apps is using up your precious power, you can look in Settings/Battery/battery usage and it will give you usage percentages for each app. You can check for 24 hours or 7 hours. What an education!

Pokemon Go accessories you have to see.

Today we’re going to look at a couple of accessories for the POKEMON GO game, the popular Niantic game which got everyone off their big, fat couch.
First is the Pokémon GO PLUS, a Nintendo product which was supposed to come out in July, but, due to some functionality issues, As per Nintendo, “The Pokémon GO Plus accessory will now be released in September 2016 instead of the originally expected end of July launch date. Thanks for your patience, trainers."
Lets have a look, shall we?

POKEMON GO PLUS:
The player can wear it on a wrist with the fabric strap that comes with it, clip it to his shirt (or, as one comic said, as a tie clip), or in hand. The trainer has to be within proximity of a compatible iPhone which has the game installed.
U.S. Price: $34.99
Compatible Devices:
•    iPhone® 5 / 5c / 5s / SE / 6 / 6s / 6 Plus / 6s Plus with iOS: 8–9
•    Android: 2 GB RAM or more with Android Ver. 4.4–6.0
Bluetooth Smart: ver. 4 or higher

POKEMON GO PLUS--CAN'T CATCH 'EM ALL

POKEMON GO PLUS--CAN'T CATCH 'EM ALL

What does it do? LED and vibration to signal the proximity of Pokémon and Pokestops. Note: This device can only be used with Pokémon creatures the player has already captured. That alone may detract from sales. But, I can see this being handy for a parent with a young child who wants to play, but the parent doesn’t want to allow the child unrestricted access to the phone. The downsides? The player won’t be able to tell if they caught the Pokemon until the phone is opened. Also, this device works better when the player has access to a 3G/4G network, and their phone has GPS.
There are already skins out for the Pokemon Go Plus, but examine the insignia closely before purchasing.

Training Ball--currently a Kickstarter

POKEMON TRAINER BALL:
GamerReality LLC has a Kickstarter campaign for the Pokémon ‘Trainerball’.  This is a ball which is a little smaller than a baseball, the internal electronics are covered with foam and then wrapped in a rubber material. You can throw the ball where the Pokémon is located, or used as a handheld gestured remote (similar to what you do when you pretend to throw the ball for your dog, but keep it in your hand). It has a phone charger built in, so when you or your phone is tired of playing, you can recharge your phone.

POKEMON AIMER

POKEMON AIMER:
The clever people at www.Pokemonaimer.com have created a plastic cover for the iPhone 6 and 6+ which can be slid over the screen and used to physically guide the players finger straight toward the Pokemon. The cost is $9.99. You can get cheaper ones from other places, but this is the only one we saw which doesn’t greatly restrict screen view during use. It comes in different colors, and is described as a bumper bowling alley for the Pokemon-throw challenged.

Coming Soon to an iPhone Near you! iOS 10 Update

With a redesigned lock screen and a massive Siri upgrade, iOS 10 promises to be the best iOS update yet.

The message features promise all new fun, including in-app selfies, a sketching feature (similar to the one found on the Apple watch), new background animations, and tapbacks for messages (which can also be deleted). There will also be predictive emoji suggestions, and will offer word suggestions

A new Home app for the popular Home kit will be available, thereby reducing or elimination the former need for additional apps to make the Home kit work smoothly.

All of this will be on a new home screen with 3D touch, and a lock screen which will allow the user to read and interact with notifications without opening every app.

Siri will be open to third party developers. Want an Uber or Lyft ride? Siri can arrange that for you.

Like music? Apple’s music app has been redesigned to have more features than ever. Live streaming media within apps will be available, as well, providing more interactions for gamers.

The newly designed camera app is easier to use, likely in response to the iPhone 7’s massive memory upgrade. Not only will you be able to photograph your life, but photos will now have advanced facial and object recognition features, so they can be sorted by a person, item, or event in a new memories feature.

The map features have also been upgraded, so it will have better navigation capabilities, suggest nearby points of interest, and can be used to by third party developers.

The lockscreen? No more ‘Press home to Open’ or ‘slide to Open’.  iOS will now have a ‘raise to wake’ feature, in which the user presses the home button, thereby displaying their notifications. The lockscreen now displays a lot more information, which is readily accessible, so digging around to find apps is no longer necessary.  The cherry on top is the fact that you can delete the notifications with a ‘clear all’.

OS will connect your PC web browser to your iPhone, so, if you’re on a webpage on your laptop, you can seamlessly move to your iPhone and continue where you left off without sending yourself a link.

iOS 10 also has a water-detection software which will warn the user to unplug the device, and you’ll have the ability to flush those unwanted apps you never use, like stocks and watch.

There’s a new Bedtime feature in the Clock app which will keep track of how long you sleep, create an ongoing history and wake you up with soft sounds instead of a raucous alarm.

Who is out of the loop? iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and iPod touch 5th generation devices will not be able to download the mobile operating system.

And finally, just in case you want to use your new phone for calls, Apple has added full screen caller ID, and voicemail transcription. For the hard of hearing, this feature and the possible spam warning indicator are going to be a godsend.
